Drummer Tim Giles has fulfilled his promise as a child prodigy and one of the most thrilling young contemporary jazz drummers on the scene. Born on the 3rd of April 1980 in the intriguingly named town of Eye. He has hit things with a veritable who's who of British Jazz stars including Iain Ballamy, Julian Arguelles, Stan Sulzmann and is a long time collaborator with pianist Richard Fairhurst. Still only 24 years old, his work for Babel includes four albums playing for the Richard Fairhurst-led Hungry Ants and last years' critically acclaimed debut for Tom Arthurs' Centripede.
Born in 1980, Tim turned professional after completing his exams in May 1996. He was shortlisted for the best performance award at the 1996 Glasgow Festival and Jazzthing magazine described him as a `Schlagzergwunder'! With a Daily Telegraph award, in March 1997, Richard and drummer TGFly (a.k.a Tim Giles), performed as a duo at the 3rd European Tournament of Improvisation in Poitiers, France. They achieved 2nd place out of 16 bands pre-selected for the final stages. He was also amember of with Django Bates' Delightful Precipice and has recorded on sessions with members of The Orb. He also plays with British jazz stars Stan Sulzmann, Iain Ballamy, Julian Arguelles, and is a member of the Perfect Houseplants and Tom Arthurs' Centripede. He took up electronic drum pad in 1998 and has continued to acquire a fascination with all things electronic. He is associated with bands from North-west London LOOP Collective among them trumpeter Robbie Robson's Bitches Brew Miles-period influenced Dog Soup and Qualia (with Tom Arthurs). While another LOOP band, Fraud, one of Cheltenham 2006's Jerwood Foundation Rising Stars, Tim co-leads with recent RAM graduate and highly rated tenor saxophonist James Allsopp. Fraud released their debut on Babel in early 2007 and have been nominated for this year's Jazz Awards. "007 is turning into a fruitful year for Tim - he has also been nominated for the prestigious Paul Hamlyn foundation award for composition.
